Neighbour Day Unsung Hero Award

Congratulations to Sarah and Tyson Carmody, who were awarded Neighbour Day Unsung Hero Award by Relationships Australia in Alice Springs.

The Neighbour Day Unsung Award recognises community members who have made a significant contribution to running a neighbour day event in their local area or community and/or who have assisted with building broad community awareness around Neighbour Day – often working from behind the scenes with a positive attitude, a willingness to help in whatever capacity necessary, and a commitment to supporting others.

Sarah and Tyson put in an amazing effort in organising the great event on 07 April 2018 out at Blacktank Bore family outstation, approximately 80km from Alice Springs.  The aims of the event included sharing a cuppa, having a yarn and reconnecting with neighbours and families, as well as reconnecting to country. They arranged a number of games and activities, including a fun run. It was promoted as an alcohol free event, with BBQ facilities available, attendees were invited to stay out overnight as well.

Neighbour Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in March every year with the aim of fostering strong personal connections that last the whole year round. Every day can be neighbour day. The  annual theme for Neighbour Day 2019 is Loneliness: What neighbours can do to create connections.
In 2019, Neighbour Day falls on Sunday 31 March. We will be looking to encourage every neighbour to identify people near them who may be vulnerable and lonely and to engage with them.
