Youth in Communities - Professional Development & Mentoring

Through the Youth in Communities (YiC) Program, the Australian Government is working to deliver a comprehensive youth strategy in the Northern Territory (NT) that:
  • Provides a range of effective diversion activities for at-risk Indigenous young people
  • Improves life choices and outcomes for Indigenous young people
  • Strengthens and improves the youth services infrastructure, both in the number of youth workers employed and the facilities available for providing youth services and activities.

The Professional Development and Mentoring Project is a component of the program and is being delivered by Relationships Australia NT in partnership with its South Australian Office.  The objectives of the project are to:

  • Establish, promote and maintain communication and interaction between staff responsible for delivering Youth in Communities (YIC) services, thereby providing regular opportunities for information exchange, sharing of knowledge and reinforcement of best practice in delivering YIC services
  • Deliver professional development and mentoring support to YIC youth workers and youth worker trainees, with particular consideration given to using group formats and providing youth workers and youth work trainees with the opportunity to participate in facilitated online youth worker networks and practice discussion forums
  • Deliver professional development and mentoring support to YIC coordinators and line managers who are delivering YIC services, including through the encouragement of best practice service delivery.
