Children's Therapeutic Team (Urban and Remote)

The therapeutic team support families to raise children in a safe and supportive environment by providing therapeutic interventions to children (0 - 17yrs) who have experienced hurt or trauma.

Children exposed to hurt or trauma are more likely to experience anxiety, are at risk of developing relationship problems and mental illness if they are not given the opportunity to experience safe and protective relationships with others.

The Children’s Therapeutic team, in consultation with families and community members, works in an outreach capacity (Darwin and Palmerston) and remote areas (Katherine, Tiwi Islands)

  • Specialist Children’s Counsellors (social workers or psychologists)
  • Indigenous Community Consultants who have specialist knowledge of the children and their communities.

Interventions include

  • Consulting with appropriate community members to assist with increasing protective and child centered strategies
  • Brief interventions with the parents / guardians focusing on the child/ren in an effort to assist parents with new ways to help their children.
  • Work directly with the child / ren and their relationship with their parent / guardian to ensure that children’s lives are improved over time.
  • Provide ongoing and regular support to children in their environments
